Alliances of Male Bottlenose Dolphins in Shark Bay, WA

Shark Bay, Western Australia is host to one of the most complex societies of nonhumans known to modern science. Adult males maintain up to three levels of nested alliances through competitive and cooperative engagements. The two males in the photograph - Rickets and Sloopy - are 'first-order' mates, but they are reliably found with 12 other close associates - 'The Blues Brothers'.
